Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much does a prosthetic eye or scleral shell cost?
The cost of a custom prosthetic eye or scleral shell varies depending on the service selected. At SEE Prosthetics, prices typically range from £1500-1700 for a new realistic or custom artistic or fantasy prosthetic eye. Prosthesis of duplicate shape with different iris design or copy of current design are priced between £500-900 depending on complexity. An ocular review (our ocular MOT!) costs £60. Contact us for a personalised quote during your consultation or visit our Prices page for more information.
2. How long does it take to get a prosthetic eye?
The process usually takes 3-4 appointments scheduled, including the initial consultaton. These are scheduled at your convenience and can be as little as a few days to a couple of weeks apart, depending on how far in advance booking takes place, clinic availability and your personal schedule. For patients requiring faster solutions, we offer an express manufacturing service to ensure timely delivery with all stages of manufacture completed with you in a day, without compromising quality.
3. Do prosthetic eyes look real?
Yes, our prosthetic eyes are meticulously crafted to replicate the natural appearance of your eye. We conduct colour matching and painting with you present, and using detailed artistry, ensure the prosthesis blends seamlessly with your features.
4. Can I get a custom artistic or fantasy prosthetic eye?
Absolutely! At SEE Prosthetics, we offer a Custom Fantasy Eye Service, allowing you to choose unique designs, colours, or patterns beyond natural-looking prosthetics. This service is perfect for those who want to express their individuality.
5. How is a scleral shell different from a prosthetic eye?
A scleral shell is a thinner prosthesis designed to fit over a damaged or discolored eye, enhancing its appearance while maintaining its natural structure and movement. A prosthetic eye, on the other hand, is a full replacement for a missing eye.
6. How often should I replace my prosthetic eye or scleral shell?
This depends from person to person and your personal experience with your prosthesis. Some people look to replace after 2 years for a refresh, but we have also met people who have maintained a prosthesis for a decade! We recommend replacing your prosthesis every 3-5 years, depending on wear and tear. Regular maintenance and check-ups can extend its lifespan and ensure it remains comfortable and functional.
7. Is the process painful?
Not at all. The process of measuring, fitting, and adjusting your prosthetic eye or scleral shell is non-invasive and designed to ensure your comfort at every stage.
8. How do I care for my prosthetic eye or scleral shell?
Your prosthesis should be cleaned regularly using the guidelines provided during your fitting. We also offer professional cleaning and polishing services to keep it in excellent condition.
9. Does SEE Prosthetics accept insurance?
Currently, SEE Prosthetics does not accept insurance payments. However, we provide detailed invoices and documentation that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement.
10. Why should I choose SEE Prosthetics for my ocular prosthetics?
SEE Prosthetics combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced techniques to create bespoke prosthetic eyes and scleral shells. Our personalised care, attention to detail, and small scale, environmentally conscious practice set us apart, ensuring you receive the highest quality prosthesis tailored to your needs.
