Introduction:
The human eye is an incredible marvel of nature, providing us with the invaluable gift of sight. Unfortunately, not everyone is fortunate enough to retain this gift due to various reasons, such as injury, disease, or congenital conditions. For those who have lost an eye, or who have an un-aesthetic insensitive blind eye, a custom prosthetic eye serve as a remarkable solution, seamlessly blending artistry and medical science to restore the aesthetic harmony of the face, improve confidence and enhance social interactions.
The Art of Measurement:
The process of crafting custom ocular prosthetics begins with a meticulous examination of the socket. The prosthetist/ocularist, the skilled artisans behind these prosthetics, ensure there are no areas of concern or sensitivity such as lesions. The possibility of prosthetic movement, which is dependant on the remaining structures within the socket, is also assessed. Other factors such as depth, width, and contours are taken into account and an ocular tray I selected to try in the socket. At SEE prosthetics, we use 3D printed ocular trays, specially designed in different shapes and sized to best capture the internal contours of an eye socket. If you have ever had dental impressions taken, it is a similar process to produce a custom, well-fitted eye! Alginate (a natural and medically safe impression material made from algae) is squeezed into the tray to capture the shape of the socket. This step is crucial to ensure a perfect fit and natural appearance.
Wax Pattern Trial and Gaze Placement:
Before moving on to the final prosthetic, a crucial step involves creating a wax pattern. This preliminary model allows the prosthetist to assess the fit and position of the prosthetic within the eye socket and can be adjusted until optimal comfort and eye opening are achieved. The gaze is meticulously considered, and is positioned during this stage to ensure that the prosthetic aligns seamlessly with the patient’s natural gaze, providing a lifelike appearance and functional alignment.
Material Selection and mould making:
Once the wax pattern trial is successful, the next step involves selecting the appropriate materials. Modern ocular prosthetics are typically made from biocompatible materials such as acrylic, which are not only durable but also compatible with the sensitive tissues of the eye socket. At SEE prosthetics, quality scleral acrylic is used, with custom colours mixed according to the colour of the white of your natural eye. The wax pattern with positioned gaze is made into a 2-part plaster mould, and boiled away to leave a perfectly shaped void representative of the shape of your final prosthesis, and the gaze unit fixed in position waiting to be incorporated into the acrylic base. The coloured acrylic is then mixed and formed in the mould under pressure. The cured acrylic with the gaze unit embedded in it will serve as the foundation for the prosthetic eye.
Artistry in Detailing:
With the foundation in place, the true artistry of custom ocular prosthetics comes to life during the detailing phase. The prosthetist uses their artistic skills to meticulously paint the prosthetic eye, matching the color, pattern, and nuances of the remaining natural eye. The goal is to create a seamless blend, allowing the prosthetic to become virtually indistinguishable from the real eye. This process requires a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of the nuances of human anatomy.
Fitting and Adjustments:
Once the prosthetic eye is crafted and painted, it is carefully fitted into the patient’s eye socket. Prosthetists work closely with the wearer, making necessary adjustments to ensure comfort, proper movement, and alignment with the natural eye. This collaborative process is crucial in achieving both functional and aesthetic success.
Emotional Restoration:
Beyond the technical aspects, custom ocular prosthetics play a profound role in emotional healing. Restoring a person’s appearance after the loss of an eye can significantly impact their self-esteem and confidence, allowing them to face the world with renewed assurance.
Conclusion:
In the realm of medical advancements and artistic craftsmanship, custom ocular prosthetics stand as a testament to the harmonious integration of science and art. These prosthetics not only restore aesthetics but also contribute to the emotional well-being of individuals, allowing them to regain a sense of normalcy and confidence in their daily lives.
