When it comes to the design of a prosthetic eye, the sky is the limit! Because of the way in which artificial eyes are manufactured, you can design the iris (coloured part of the eye) and the sclera (white part of the eye) to be any way you choose. More people than ever are choosing to highlight their individuality and uniqueness, and embrace their visible differences. And why shouldn’t they? After all, it is our individuality that makes the world an interesting place, and beauty can be found in all shapes, colours and forms!
Custom ocular prosthetics, or artificial eyes, are made from acrylic known as polymethyl-methacrylate or PMMA. Regardless of whether you would like to opt for a realistic copy of your natural eye, or a design completely of your choosing, almost anything is possible. The design can be hand-painted, or have a printed design, gem, metal work or glitter embedded and completely encapsulated in the acrylic. This means that the prosthesis is safe and comfortable to wear, and the steps for manufacture are effectively exactly the same as for a regular prosthetic eye.
If you already have a prosthetic eye that is comfortable and fits well and would like a copy with different appearance, this is also feasible using duplication methods. The shape of your current prosthesis is copied using silicone putty in 2 parts. The position of the iris (the part of the eye that is coloured and dictates the gaze) is marked onto the matrix and by using a 3D marker on the pupil prior to topping with the second half of the putty matrix. Measurements of the iris can also be taken to ensure that the size is correct.
